Budgam (Jammu and Kashmir) Nov. 14 (ANI)
Jammu and Kashmir Government has set up a new reeling unit in Bhagat-e-Kanipora of Budgam district to boost cocoon production in the valley and generate employment for the youth.
Ghulam Hassan Mir, Agriculture Minister of the state, who opened the unit on Tuesday said that the aim is to improve the post- cocoon sector while inaugurating the reeling unit.
"Disposal of cocoon should take place from here and instead of sending it outside we should try to sell it as a finished commodity. The benefit will be that it will generate employment and the cocoon growers will get the correct price for their produce," said Mir.
Kashmir silk industry was once holding a significant position in the world due to its superior quality and luster but gradually the industry witnessed a sharp decline.
With the recent initiatives undertaken by the sericulture department of the state government, the industry has tried to regain its lost shine.
Masrat Jan, a silk weaver, appreciated the government's move and said that it would benefit the unemployed youth.
"We are very happy that a new factory has been set up and it will provide employment to many unemployed. It will be beneficial," said Jan.
Gulam Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, a silk unit holder, said that with the setting up of such units, pre-cocoon and post cocoon sector would be enhanced.
"The government has set up a reeling unit and this is just the beginning. We are hopeful that if youths engage themselves in the reeling unit then it will boost silk production within the state," said Bhat.
