Didn't drop Arunachal boy at shop: Cops
The Delhi Police on Saturday reportedly said that they did not drop the Arunachal student, who died after being beaten up by shopkeepers, back at a Lajpat Nagar shop to be attacked again.
In what appears to be yet another violent attack on a member of the Northeast community, an 18-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh studying in Delhi died on Thursday from beatings by several shopkeepers in a market area of Lajpat Nagar in the national capital on Wednesday evening, said reports.
The boy, identified as Nido Taniam, had got engaged in an altercation on Wednesday with some people in the market after he was teased for his hairstyle leading to a fight.
The glass of a shop had broken leading to more violence in which the boy was mercilessly beaten up leading to his death the next day. He was found dead in his room.
Activists alleged that police apathy also caused the death since though cops came but did not rescue him. He died of internal injuries, said reports.
The victims' friends were also there when the altercation occurred. Activists said police had brokered a peace first but then did not act. The boy was asked to pay Rs 10,000/- first but then why he was again beaten and left there was not clear.
Noted activist from Northeast, Binalakshmi Nepram alleged that police refused to take FIR against the shopkeepers.
She tweeted, "Shopkeepers #LajpatNagar made fun of victim's blonde hair.Argument broke out. 6-8 locals came out and thrashed victim with Iron rods & sticks (sic)."
"Police arrived/settled case with fine Rs. 10,000 & took deceased to PS but later policemen dropped him at same place where fight took place (sic)," she posted.
The activists also planned a protest on Feb 1.
"Protest tomorrow,1 Feb,12 pm #LajpatNagar Part I in front of area killing took place as police refuses to file FIR against culprits! #Delhi," posted Nepram on Friday.
