Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Politburo member and Vizianagaram MP Pusapathi Ashok Gajapathi Raju, who is the titular Raja of Vizianagaram estate, took oath as a cabinet minister at the centre this evening. In his 36-year long political career, Raju, first time MP, who held several portfolios earlier in Telugu Desam Party (TDP) state governments, will be part of a Union cabinet for the first time.

Raju, who was born on June 16, 1951, was elected from the Vizianagaram consecutively for the 6th time Andhra Pradesh.

The 62-year-old Raju had started his political career by contesting on behalf of Janata party in 1978 and later he was elected to Andhra Pradesh Assembly in 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2009 as Telugu Desam candidate.

His political career spanning nearly 36 years has been elected MLA seven times and MP one time and has whelmed various ministries in the Andhra Pradesh cabinet.

He was elected as member of Parliament to the 16th Lok Sabha from Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh) and he held office as Excise Minister and Commercial Taxes Minister in N T Rama Rao's cabinet.

Later he held Finance and Legislative affairs Minister and Revenue Minister in Chandrababu Naidu's Cabinet. He is Politburo Member in Telugu Desam Party.

Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju comes from the Pusapati Royal family belongs to the Suryavanshi Dynasty Kshatriyas of Udaipur MahaRana family genealogical tree of which Rama of Ramayana.

His Father, Pusapati Vijaya Rama Gajapati Raju, 'The Raja Saheb of Vizianagaram' D.Litt. (born 1 May 1924 - died 14 November 1995) was an Indian parliamentarian and philanthropist.

He was the eldest son of Maharaja Alak Narayana Gajapathi and Maharani Vidyavathi Devi of the princely state of Vizianagram in Andhra Pradesh.
