The alert police and public foiled an attempt to loot a jewellery shop at gun point by a three-member gang in a broad daylight at the busy South Avani Moola Street in the city today.

Police said the gang barged into Vishnuram jewellery shop and tied two employees with ropes and gagged their mouth. As the burglars could not break the iron chest containing gold jewels valued several crores of rupees, they robbed 20 sovereigns of gold jewels from the showcase and Rs 2000 cash at gun point.

The public raised an alarm and a traffic police Head Constable Nagaraj boldly chased the gang and managed to overpower two of them with the help of public at Dhanappamudali Street. The third member of the gang was arrested by the police later, when he attempted to flee from the city.

Police investigation revealed that the trio hailed from Kolkata in West Bengal. Police recovered a fully loaded country-made gun and two knives from them. Further investigations were on.
