State Social Welfare Department officials with local police jointly prevented the marriage of a minor girl at Kandiyapuram Village in this Southern district.

Official sources said the marriage was arranged between a 17-year-old girl, studying plus one and a 26-year-old youth. Both the families conducted betrothal ceremony and the marriage was fixed for May 26.

Based on a tip off, Virudhunagar district social welfare Officer R.Chandradevi along with a police team rushed to the village this noon and warned the girl's parents of legal action, if the marriage was performed.

On inquiry, the girl admitted that she agreed for the marriage only to satisfy her parents and expressed her desire to continue with her studies.

The officials got separate statements signed by the parents of the girl that they would stop the marriage immediately failing which action could be taken against them according to law.
