Ramdev's 'honeymoon' remark may harm BJP in Uttarakhand
Baba Ramdev in his over enthusiasm to support BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi seems to have unwittingly adversely impacted the electoral prospects of the saffron party in Uttarakhand, especially in Haridwar, the home turf of the Baba.
Inspite of the perceived Modi wave and the anti-incumbency factor against the lacklusture performance of the Congress led UPA-2, the BJP in the state is facing a very tough contest from its main rival.
Now yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who has been indulging in virulent tirade against Nehru-Gandhi family, has created new troubles for the BJP by his widely reported recent statement in Uttar Pradesh that 'Rahul Gandhi goes to the houses of Dalits for honeymoon and that had he married a Dalit woman, he would have made his life and it would have made him the Prime Minister of the country."
The Dalit organisations are infuriated against Ramdev, terming his remark as 'anti-Dalit', while many women activists have condemned the Baba for insulting the whole women community. Hundreds of Dalits, led by the former M P and Dalit activist, Harbal Singh Saathi, held a demonstration in front of the Baba's Patanjali Yogpeeth here and warned that if the he was not arrested by April, 30, they would lock the gate of the Yogpeeth.
Almost all the political parties, except the BJP, have unequivocally condemned the Baba for making such derogatory statement against dalit women.
After the registration of an FIR. under the SC/ST act, the Baba has expressed regret, but the resentment against him is not dying down and his remark is turning into a poll issue, with all the parties, opposed to the BJP, trying to take political mileage in Haridwar and other constituencies which have a sizeable dalit population.
However, how much it will really impact the election scenario, only future will tell.
