FIR lodged against Azam in Shamli over his Kargil remark
On the directives of the Election Commission (EC), Shamli district authorities today lodged an FIR against Uttar Pradesh Minority Welfare Minister Mohammad Azam Khan.
The FIR was registered a day after EC banned him from holding any public meetings or roadshows in UP over his controversial statement on Kargil war. According to police sources, FIR was registered against Mr Khan at Thana Bhavan police station in Kairana Lok Sabha constituency under Sections 153(A), 295(A) and 505(2) of the IPC and Sections 125, 123(2) of the Representation of Peoples' Act.
Addressing an election rally in Jalalabad for party candidate Nahid Hasan on April 8, Mr Khan had said the Kargil victory was due to Muslim soldiers.
He was attacked by Congress and BJP alike, who slammed the leader for communalising the poll. Both parties also complained to the poll panel over the issue.
Yesterday, the EC banned Mr Khan as well as BJP's Amit Shah from holding any public meetings or roadshows in UP.
The EC also accused the Akhilesh Yadav government of 'soft-pedalling' in taking action against Mr Khan, who is a Cabinet Minister.
The state government was also asked to lodge a first information report against the two leaders for making hate speeches during the election campaign.
An FIR has already been registered against BJP leader Amit Shah in Shamli and Bijnore districts over his controversial statements.
