Must not elect leaders like Mulayam, say parents of Delhi gang rape victim
The parents of a 23-year-old woman who was gang raped and killed on the outskirts of Delhi on December 16, 2012, have strongly criticised Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav for his statement that rapists should not be hanged, but treated more leniently by the courts.
"We do not agree with what Mulayam Singh has said. Such things cannot be accepted when they happen every day. When such people who are in positions of power make such comments, it is totally wrong, I would appeal to the people and to the women at large that they should not elect such leaders who make such comments. With such comments, he is only inviting criminals to repeat such acts," the Delhi gang rape victim's mother said.
"If such a big leader like Mulayam Singh makes such comments, then how can one imagine that this country will remain safe. Today, whatever atrocities are being done against women, nobody is talking about their safety. Instead, there is a design to keep women trampled forever. My request to the citizens of this country is that they should not elect such leaders who make such irresponsible comments," the victim's father said.
Yadav had on Thursday said it was wrong to give capital punishment to rapists involved in the gang rape of two persons in Mumbai in August and September of last year, adding that boys make mistakes at times.
Speaking at a rally here, Yadav questioned the need for a court of the land to hand down capital punishment to the three men involved in the two crimes.
"We will bring changes in the law when we come to power," Yadav said.
