YSRCP ahead in campaign in Vijayawada constituency
YSR Congress Party candidate for Vijayawada Parliamentary constituency, Koneru Rajendra Prasad has been campaigning in the constituency for the last 10 days, while the Congress party few days ago, announced its candidate and he is yet to launch campaign.
Vijayawada Parliamentary constituency is considered to be a fortress to the Congress party. Except three times-1984, 1991,1999-the Congress candidates have been winning the seat.
The two-time MP, Lagadapati Rajagopal, who was an ardent votary of integrated Andhra Pradesh state, announced political retirement after the Parliament had passed the bifurcation bill, making the Congress to search for a candidate.
YSRCP candidate, Koneru Prasad, who was in prison for over a year in corruption cases and a close aide of Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, has launched his campaign and visited a number of villages. The YSRCP is receiving good response in rural areas, Mr.Prasad told reporters.
The Congress party announced Devineni Avinash, youth congress leader, as its candidate. The significance of the election is that both the YSRCP and Congress party candidates are political novices, entered politics recently and fighting a big battle.
Meanwhile, the Telugu Desam party is yet to announce its candidate for the parliamentary constituency, as the BJP, with which the TDP reached alliance, is demanding the seat.
Kesineni Srinivas, TDP leader was assured by the TDP leadership of the seat previously, and he has been making preparations to contest. TDP sources said that former Union Minister Daggubati Purandeswari, who resigned the Congress and joined the BJP recently, keen to contest from Vijayawada constituency. So far the Congress has won 11 times in the constituency.
