Predicting that the Left parties would suffer huge loss in the election, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today claimed that it was only the Congress which will prevent the BJP from coming to power.

"With the Left parties poised to suffer even further losses this time, it is only the Congress that can counter the divisive ideology of the BJP, he said, while addressing a public meeting in connection with the electioneering of Congress candidate and Union Minister of State for Food K V Thomas.

Alleging that the Left parties had always refused to change with the time, he said, "the result is that their policies and programmes do not take into account of the realities of the day and lead to a slow down of the process of growth and development."

Stating that the people in the country had started to realise and recognise the attitude of the Left parties, he said it was because of that they suffered huge loss in the 2009 general elections and also lost Kerala and West Bengal in the subsequent elections to the Assembly.

'I believe that the Left parties will continue to decline unless they show some willingness to change their dogmatic ways of thinking,' he added.

Condemning the increasing incidents of political violence in the state, he said, "I am sure that the people of Kerala will out rightly reject this cult of violence."

Pointing out that Kerala was a shining example of a tolerant, pluralistic and secular society, Dr Singh said that 'over the years you have proved time and again that Kerala has no space for a divisive party like the BJP.'
