Efforts to generate awareness among women, with regard to voting, are apparently not bearing fruit in this district where the percentage of female voters were the least -- 21.09 -- in the state in the 2009 general election.

The Assembly constituency-wise break-up of women voters -- within Bhind Lok Sabha constituency -- was Gohad 18 pc; Ater, Lahar and Mehgaon 18.50 pc each and Bhind 19 per cent. Data from other Assembly segments was not immediately available.

"The district is sensitive vis-a-vis elections. Despite all the endeavours towards security, anti-social elements open fire at polling centres and an atmosphere of terror prevails. Consequently, either kin tell us not to go or women are themselves afraid," said Vineeta Soni, a resident of this district.

Congress District President Snehlata Jain said that the district is still enmeshed in tradition and women are supposed to venture out of home in purdah. Men do not take members of the fairer sex along with them.
