Goa, sharing its borders with Maharastra and Karnataka, the state Excise deparment has intensified checking of vehicles at various inter-state checking points at Mollem,, Pollem, Patradevi, Dodamarg, Kerim and Naibag in south and north Goa for illegal transportation of liquor, in view of the Lok Sabha election here on April 12.


The Excise department official said, 'every vehicle is being checked and Excise personnel are alert 24 hours at the inter-state checking points and seized 2400 bulk litres of illicit liquor costing Rs 2.65 lakh from both the Parliamentary constituencies from the day the election Model Code of Conduct was enforced till April 4.'

The official also said that department has registered 82 different offences under the Excise act during this period.'

The 12 flying squads headed by inspectors- 11 at each taluka and one stationed at headquarters in capital city here, are ensuring the Model Code of Conduct is not violated, he said.

Another 12 teams have been kept as stand by in case of emergencies. The excise officials are also keeping a check on liquor sale in the off-shore casinos where it has restricted till 2300 hrs, he added.
