A 30-year-old farmer died when a passenger train hit his tractor at an unmanned railway crossing at Narwad-Maihsal village in Miraj tehsil of the district today.

The incident occurred at around 1015 hrs, when the deceased was on the way to his field.

The farmer, Kallu Ganpati Hegde of Narwad-Maihsal village, was crossing the railway line, when a passenger train travelling from Miraj to Belgaum hit the tractor which was on the tracks at the time, police said.

The impact knocked the vehicle and driver about 200 feet up in the air, before he fell back down on the railway line. Hegde died on the spot, while debris of the tractor were spread over a 200 metre area around the railway line.

Hegde had recently purchased the new tractor for agriculture use.

Engine driver of the passenger train immediately informed the police about the incident. The train was held up for about seven to ten minutes, before leaving for Belgaum.

Miraj Rural police and Railway police were investigating the incident further, sources added.
