Kerala CPI(M) turns down Antony's remarks on Left support to UPA
CPI(M) Kerala unit secretary Pinarayi Vijayan today dismissed the statement of senior Congress leader and Defence Minister A K Antony that the Left parties will have to cooperate with the Congress-led UPA after the Lok Sabha elections.
Talking to newspersons here, Mr Vijayan said there was no question of Left parties supporting the Congress as it would end up in two figures in the Lok Sabha.
In Kerala also, the Congress-led United Democratic Front was heading for a major electoral debacle. The general public was against the misrule of the Congress-led State Government.
Mr Antony stated that if the CPI-M was sincere in their pronounced aim to keep the communal forces at bay, they would have to co-operate with a front under Congress leadership. To keep the communal forces at bay from coming to power at the Centre, the Congress would accept cooperation from all secular parties, he said.
However, the state unit of the CPI(M) took such a stand in view of the fact that the electoral battle for 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala was mainly between the UDF and the Marxist-led Left Democratic Front.
