Congress protests over gang rape in Delhi
Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely Thursday lashed out at the AAP government over what he said were increasing rapes in the capital and official inaction.
"Is this the same party that used to protest on the streets of Delhi?" Lovely asked of the Aam Aadmi Party, which rules Delhi with the backing of the Congress.
"Today, the party's chief minister (Arvind Kejriwal) is saying that he will get a study conducted to know why such cases are happening.
"Now he is thinking of studies when the responsibility falls on him," the Congress leader said.
Lovely's comments follow the rape of a 51-year-old Danish woman in Delhi.
After leading a noisy protest outside the Delhi Secretariat, Lovely recalled that Kejriwal used to target then chief minister Sheila Dikshit for "coming up with an excuse on every issue".
"We never played politics over something like rape," Lovely said.
"We will write to not only the chief minister but also the home minister and the Lt. Governor to ensure that maximum investigation is done in this case and strict punishment is meted out to the culprits."
During the protest, Lovely climbed on top of a barricade and raised slogans against Kejriwal.
"We want to wake up this government and its chief minister from deep slumber. The party that used to agitate on the smallest of issues is today not bothered about the concerns of the common man," he said.
The Danish woman, who came to India Jan 1, was robbed and raped by eight men near the New Delhi railway station Tuesday.
