Lucknow,August 3

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday expressed deep sorrow over the death of 11 pilgrims after their vehicle plunged into a canal in Gonda district. Calling the incident "extremely heart-wrenching," the Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased and directed officials to ensure immediate medical attention for the injured.

At least eleven people were killed after a vehicle carrying pilgrims fell into a canal in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. The incident occurred under the limits of Itia Thok Police Station, officials said.

The vehicle had 15 passengers onboard and they were going to Prithvinath Temple to offer prayers, they said.

In a post on X, CM Yogi wrote, "The loss of life in the unfortunate accident in the district of Gonda is extremely tragic and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the grief-stricken families. Instructions have been given to provide financial assistance of Rs05-05 lakh to the kin of those who lost their lives in this accident, and to the district administration officials to immediately take the injured to the hospital for their proper treatment."

"I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed souls attain salvation, the bereaved families find the strength to bear this immense sorrow, and the injured recover swiftly. Om Shanti!," the post added on X.

Earlier in this week, CM Yogi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the stampede incident near Mansa Devi Temple in Uttarakhand's Haridwar and announced Rs 2 lakh financial aid for families of the deceased from Uttar Pradesh.

Om Shanti 🙏 The CM's words show compassion, but Rs 5 lakh can never replace a loved one. We need strict enforcement of vehicle safety norms - was this vehicle even fit to carry passengers? Authorities must conduct surprise checks on pilgrim vehicles.

This is the second tragedy this week involving pilgrims. Maybe temples should arrange proper transportation facilities instead of leaving devotees to arrange their own transport. Safety should be priority number one during religious journeys.

As someone who frequently travels in UP, I've noticed many rural roads lack proper barriers near water bodies. A simple guardrail could have prevented this tragedy. Hope this incident leads to infrastructure improvements across the state.

While the compensation is good, what about long-term support for families who lost their breadwinners? The government should also provide job opportunities or educational support for children affected by such tragedies.

So heartbreaking to imagine their final moments 😔 We Indians need to stop treating accidents as "fate" and demand better safety standards. Every life is precious - whether on highways or village roads.
