Gujarat Minister of Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education Rushikesh Patel on Tuesday penned a heartfelt post about a couple who lost their lives in the ill-fated Air India-171 plane crash.

In his post on social media, Minister Patel wrote that the DNA matches of the deceased couple, who had been settled in the United Kingdom since 1978, were identified side by side.

Their son, Miten Patel, flew down from London to identify his father's body through DNA testing, a confirmation he received on Father's Day. While the story is touching, I wish our ministers would show similar sensitivity towards common people who die in road accidents daily. The government machinery worked efficiently here because it was a high-profile case. What about ordinary citizens?

The DNA matching being done so quickly is commendable. Gujarat's forensic team deserves appreciation. But we must also ask why such crashes happen - was it really just fate or were there maintenance/safety lapses? #SafetyFirst

As an NRI myself, this hits close to home. Many of us settle abroad but our roots remain in India. That the sons could take their parents back with dignity matters a lot to our community. Kudos to the authorities for handling this sensitively.

"Even in death, my mother didn't let my father return home alone" - this line will stay with me forever. In our culture, we believe in saath janam ka bandhan (bond of seven lifetimes). The Patels truly lived this ideal. Om Shanti 🪔

The government's response is good but we need better compensation policies for air crash victims' families. Many NRIs have foreign insurance - what about poor Indians who lose their sole breadwinners in such tragedies? System needs improvement.
