Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday presented cash incentives totalling Rs 80 lakh to three athletes from the state who won medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, honouring their performances on the international stage.
Weightlifter Raja Muthupandi and triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, who secured silver medals in their respective events, received Rs 30 lakh each. In comparison, triple jumper Selva Prabhu was presented with Rs 20 lakh for winning a bronze medal.
The Chief Minister congratulated the three athletes and said their achievements had brought pride to Tamil Nadu and the country. He expressed confidence that their performances would inspire young sportspersons across the state to pursue excellence in international competitions.
Muthupandi won silver in the men's 65 kg weightlifting event at the 23rd Commonwealth Games. Following his medal-winning performance, Vijay announced a cash incentive of Rs 30 lakh for the Tamil Nadu weightlifter.
In a statement issued after Muthupandi's victory, the Chief Minister said the athlete's achievement would inspire youngsters and give them renewed energy and confidence to excel in sports.
He also expressed hope that Muthupandi would continue to bring laurels to both Tamil Nadu and India through his future performances.
Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu further strengthened Tamil Nadu's success at the Games in the men's triple jump. Chithravel, who hails from Tiruvarur district, clinched the silver medal, while Selva Prabhu of Madurai district secured bronze in the event. Congratulating the two athletes, Vijay said their performances deserved recognition and appreciation.

Great to see athletes from smaller towns like Tiruvarur and Madurai getting recognition. But let's be honest - is Rs 30 lakh really enough for a Commonwealth medal? Our cricketers get crores for just playing IPL matches. We need to invest more in grassroots sports development across India, not just Tamil Nadu. Still, better late than never! 🙏
Excellent move! 👏 These athletes have brought immense pride to our nation. The prize money will definitely help them in their training and preparation for future competitions like the Olympics. Tamil Nadu is truly becoming a powerhouse in Indian sports - from weightlifting to athletics, our athletes are shining bright!
As someone from outside India, it's heartening to see state governments actively supporting and rewarding athletes. The sports infrastructure in India is improving but there's still a long way to go. These young athletes deserve every bit of this recognition - they're not just winning medals, they're building a sporting culture for future generations.
Wonderful to see the state government valuing sports so highly! 🎉 However, I hope the focus isn't just on cash rewards - our athletes need better training facilities, coaches, and international exposure throughout the year, not just during Commonwealth Games seasons. Let's build a sustainable sports ecosystem in Tamil Nadu and across India. Congrats to all three medal winners!
This is exactly what we need - more investment in sports at the state level! Good job by Tamil Nadu government. The athletes genuinely deserve this recognition for their hard work and dedication. Wishing Raja Muthupandi, Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu all the best for their future endeavours! 🇮
