Talent-driven ecosystem positions Vizag as emerging IT growth hub

Vizag emerges as an IT hub with Infosys’ 7,000-seat campus, 1,900 employees, and talent-driven policies reversing migration. Nara Lokesh highlights ecosystem success.

"The growth of Visakhapatnam as an IT hub is a direct reflection of the strength of our local talent and the ecosystem we are building around it. - Nara Lokesh"

Visakhapatnam, April 30

The Andhra Pradesh government's talent-driven ecosystem has positioned Visakhapatnam as an emerging IT growth hub, officials said on Thursday.

Through progressive policies such as IT & GCC (Information Technology & Global Capability Centres) and LIFT (Land Incentive for Tech Hubs), coupled with industry-academia collaboration, robust infrastructure support, and employee-friendly urban mobility solutions, the state has created an enabling environment for IT companies to scale seamlessly, they said.

The ecosystem-led approach is helping reverse the long-standing trend of talent migration, positioning Visakhapatnam not just as a source of skilled professionals, but as a destination where global companies can build and retain high-quality teams.

Visakhapatnam is rapidly emerging as one of India's most promising IT destinations, powered by a strong local talent base and a maturing ecosystem that is increasingly attracting global technology investments. Reinforcing this trend, Infosys has been allotted 20 acres of land in Vizag to set up a 7,000-seater facility, said a government release.

Over the last two years, Infosys has scaled its workforce in Visakhapatnam from 250 employees in early 2024 to nearly 1,900 currently, with an additional 750 seats set to become operational in the near term.

The company has also outlined plans for a permanent 20-acre campus, with a long-term seating capacity of 7,000 professionals - demonstrating strong confidence in the region's long-term potential.

According to the official release, a defining feature of this growth is the deep integration with the local talent ecosystem. The Visakhapatnam campus has recruited over 1,000 freshers and 500 lateral hires from the region, reflecting the availability of industry-ready talent and the success of Andhra Pradesh's focussed skilling and industry-aligned education initiatives.

"The growth of Visakhapatnam as an IT hub is a direct reflection of the strength of our local talent and the ecosystem we are building around it. For years, our youth have powered global technology companies from across the world. Today, that same talent is choosing to build their careers here in Andhra Pradesh," said Nara Lokesh, Minister for IT, Electronics & Education.

"Our vision is to create a vibrant, talent-first ecosystem where industry, academia, and government work in synergy. The expansion of Infosys in Visakhapatnam is a strong validation of this approach and reinforces our commitment to transforming Andhra Pradesh into a global hub for technology and innovation," he added.

Infosys going from 250 to 1900 in 2 years is impressive! But 7000 seats is a long-term plan - let's see how infrastructure keeps up. Vizag's roads and power supply need serious upgrades if this really takes off. Also hope local colleges are producing the right skills. Industry-ready talent is key.

Great initiative! But I wish the article mentioned more about public transport and affordable housing for IT folks. Vizag rent prices might shoot up if this grows too fast. Also, what about connectivity? Direct flights to major tech hubs would help a lot. Still, kudos to the team - reverse migration is a dream come true for many families.

As someone who worked in Vizag briefly, I can say the potential is real. The beaches and lower cost of living are huge draws compared to Bangalore traffic. But the ecosystem needs more than just Infosys - need a cluster of companies to create that proper IT culture. Hope TCS, Wipro, and others follow suit.

All this is good, but we need to be realistic. Vizag's IT story has been promised many times since the 2000s. Let the 20-acre campus actually come up and fill those 7000 seats before celebrating. Also, what about other cities in Andhra? Kurnool, Tirupati, Guntur also need similar push. Can't just focus on Vizag.
