The Mumbai-Pune 'Missing Link' project on the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway is set to improve connectivity, reduce travel time and enhance logistics efficiency, providing a boost to industry and investor confidence, the Confederation of Indian Industry said on Thursday.

The project, implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), will be opened to the public on May 1, coinciding with Maharashtra Day and inaugurated by the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers of Maharashtra.

According to CII, the project is expected to ease travel between Mumbai and Pune, two of the state's key economic centres, by improving route efficiency and reducing transit time.

The industry body said the resulting time savings are likely to translate into economic gains, with improved connectivity supporting more efficient supply chains, lowering logistics and inventory costs, and enabling faster movement of goods and workforce across the corridor.

CII noted that infrastructure projects of this scale play an important role in improving ease of doing business, strengthening regional competitiveness and attracting fresh investments into Maharashtra. The project is also expected to benefit MSMEs, manufacturing clusters and services through better market access and operational efficiency, along with fuel savings and logistics cost optimisation.

"The Mumbai-Pune Missing Link Project is a significant step toward strengthening Maharashtra's industrial ecosystem. Enhanced connectivity will improve logistics efficiency, reduce costs, and boost investor confidence, enabling businesses to scale operations more effectively," said Deepak Garg, Chairman, CII Maharashtra.

He also added that, "Continued investment in infrastructure remains essential to building a competitive business environment and sustaining economic growth in the state."

CII said the project reflects Maharashtra's continued focus on infrastructure development as a key driver of industrial expansion and economic growth.

As someone who drives between Bhosari and Vikhroli every week, I can already feel the relief. The expressway toll is already steep at over ₹400 one-way for cars, but if this missing link saves 45 minutes on the ghat stretch, it's worth every paisa. Also, the environmental impact of reduced idling in traffic jams cannot be overstated—less pollution in the ghat region that's so ecologically sensitive. Great move for Maharashtra Day! 👏

I read that CII estimates this will boost MSMEs in Nashik and Aurangabad by connecting them better to Mumbai port. That's interesting—it's not just about Mumbai-Pune but the ripple effect across western Maharashtra. With the Samruddhi Mahamarg also coming up, the state's logistics network is becoming world-class. Just hope the contractors chose good quality asphalt. 😅

Valid points from CII, but let's not ignore the elephant in the room—toll rates always increase after such projects. The MSRDC has debt of over ₹10,000 crore, and they will try to recover it from commuters. Also, will there be adequate emergency services on this missing link? The current expressway has relatively few breakdown bays. Infrastructure is welcome, but let's see the fine print. 🤔

This is exactly what Maharashtra needed! I've seen how the Delhi-Meerut expressway transformed that region—now it's our turn. The missing link will especially help farmers from Satara and Kolhapur send their produce to Mumbai markets faster. Also, daily wage workers travelling from Pune to Mumbai for construction jobs will save time and money. Hope the bus services also benefit! 🚍
