Manipur govt committed to strengthening technical education infrastructure: CM Singh
Imphal, May 24
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday reaffirmed his government's commitment to strengthening technical education infrastructure and ensuring the early commencement of academic activities at the proposed extension campus of Manipur Technical University at Heirok in Thoubal district.
The Chief Minister visited and inspected the upcoming MTU extension campus and reviewed the progress of the ongoing construction works.
Later, in a post on his official X account, Chief Minister Singh said: "The project is in its final phase, with the laboratory buildings and engineering workshop nearing completion. The overall progress is satisfactory, and the institution is expected to become operational soon."
An official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that the site was initially developed for the proposed Heirok Engineering College under MTU, but it was later decided to convert it into an extension campus of the university.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister directed the Public Works Department (PWD) Chief Engineer to blacktop the six-kilometre road connecting the campus to National Highway-102 (Imphal-Moreh Road).
He also assured that boundary walls, drains and footpaths would be constructed within the campus.
Chief Minister Singh inspected the newly constructed buildings and inquired about additional support required from the government.
MTU Vice-Chancellor W. Chandbabu Singh told the Chief Minister that the university plans to begin some academic classes at the extension campus from the upcoming academic session starting in July-August.
Chief Minister Singh also reviewed issues related to drinking water and electricity supply at the campus and assured the local MLA that both services would be improved soon.
During his visit to Heirok, the Chief Minister also inspected the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya of Thoubal district, which is currently functioning from a temporary state government building.
He interacted with teachers and students and planted saplings on the school campus.
Chief Minister Singh also visited the community health centre at Heirok and reviewed the healthcare facilities and services available to local residents.
He interacted with doctors and assured them that the existing infrastructure would be upgraded.
Later, the Chief Minister visited the Women's Market at Heirok and inspected the market sheds.
Villagers lined both sides of the road to welcome Chief Minister Singh during his visit, waving at his convoy as it passed through the area.
The visit aimed to review the progress and status of key developmental projects, enhance infrastructure, and improve public service delivery in the region.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Heirok Assembly constituency MLA Thokchom Radhesyham Singh, MTU Vice-Chancellor W. Chandbabu Singh, and Education Commissioner Ningthoujam Geoffrey.

Development works in Northeast are often delayed due to terrain and weather challenges. But CM visiting personally and giving directions shows accountability. Also, inspecting health centre and school in one visit is efficient use of time. Let's see if these promises translate into ground reality soon.
While the focus on infrastructure is commendable, I hope the government also pays attention to faculty recruitment and curriculum quality. A campus without good teachers is just empty buildings. Technical education needs both bricks and brains!
It's refreshing to see a Chief Minister personally inspect projects and interact with locals. The JNV school functioning from a temporary building for so long is worrying - hope that gets permanent infrastructure soon. Every child deserves a proper school! 🌱
Technical university extension campus, health centre upgrade, women's market inspection - this is comprehensive development approach. But we need transparency on budget allocation and timelines. Northeast has seen many unfinished projects. Let's hope this one doesn't join that list. 🤞
The road connectivity to national highway is crucial. Many good schools and colleges in remote areas suffer because of bad roads during monsoon. Students and teachers can't reach regularly. Hope PWD completes the 6 km road blacktopping before July-August as promised. 🏗️
