Madonna stuns with "witchy" look at Met Gala 2026

Pop icon Madonna turns heads at the Met Gala 2026 with a surreal, witchy ensemble featuring a ship headpiece, designed by Anthony Vaccarello.

"One of my favorite films of all time - Sabrina Carpenter"

New York City, May 5

Pop icon Madonna made a dramatic appearance at the Met Gala 2026, turning heads with a surreal, "witchy" ensemble on the red carpet, according to Billboard.

The "Queen of Pop" arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan wearing a striking black outfit, complete with a theatrical headpiece resembling a storm-tossed ship at sea. She was accompanied by four women holding the flowing grey veil trains, adding to the theatrical effect.

The custom outfit was designed by Anthony Vaccarello, it was a custom Yves Saint Laurent look inspired by British-Mexican painter Leonora Carrington's painting 'The Temptation of St. Anthony'. The look aligned with this year's Met Gala theme, "Fashion Is Art," tied to the museum's "Costume Art" exhibition, according to Billboard.

Meanwhile, Madonna is preparing for her return to music with her upcoming project Confessions II, set to release on July 3. She recently teased the album with tracks including I Feel So Free and Bring Your Love, a duet with Sabrina Carpenter.

Carpenter, who also attended the gala, wore a gown crafted from film strips of the 1954 movie Sabrina, starring Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn, which she described as "one of my favorite films of all time," according to Billboard.

In another highlight of the evening, singer Beyonce, one of the event's co-chairs, made a family appearance alongside her daughter Blue Ivy and husband Jay-Z, according to Billboard.

Madonna's bold and theatrical ensemble once again underscored her reputation for delivering memorable fashion moments at the Met Gala.

Honestly, the ship headpiece is a bit too much for my taste. But I respect that she's still experimenting with art after all these years. Sabrina Carpenter's film-strip gown sounds much more elegant though!

Madonna is the ultimate chameleon. From 80s bridal to this witchy phase - she never bores. The Leonora Carrington inspiration is spot on for a surrealist theme. Can't wait for the new album!

People call it witchy, I call it iconic. The gown with four women holding trains - pure theater. And Beyoncé bringing Blue Ivy shows how this event is about legacy now. Western fashion events are getting as family-friendly as our Indian award shows!

As a huge Madonna fan since the 90s, this look feels like a return to her avant-garde roots. Love that she's still pushing boundaries. The duet with Sabrina Carpenter sounds intriguing - hope it's not just a gimmick!

My grandmother would say she looks like the witch from Hansel and Gretel! 😂 But seriously, the artistic inspiration is beautiful. Met Gala is all about spectacle after all. Sabrina Carpenter's tribute to old Hollywood is my favorite though - classy!
