Mayurbhanj, April 1

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday extended greetings to the people of Odisha on the occasion of Utkala Divas, highlighting the state's cultural and historical significance.

In a post on social media, he said, "Odisha, a vital part of the chariot of India's advancement and progress, is renowned for its rich culture, unique crafts, and glorious history. Heartfelt congratulations to all residents of the state on Utkala Divas."

Odisha is celebrating Utkal Divas on Wednesday with great enthusiasm and pride, marking the historic formation of the state on April 1, 1936. The day commemorates the long-cherished dream of the Odia people for a separate linguistic identity.

District Magistrate of Mayurbhanj, Hemakanta Say, paid floral tributes to the eminent leaders, freedom fighters, and illustrious sons and daughters of Odisha, including Maharajas, legendary leader Biju Patnaik, Utkal Gourab Madhusudan Das, Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, and even Mahatma Gandhi, for their pivotal roles in the formation and development of the state.

Speaking to ANI, the DM said, "In Mayurbhanj, Utkal Divas is observed with great reverence. At the Baripada headquarters, all the brave sons who have contributed to the nation, state, and district are remembered. Children are participating in debates and various competitions. Today, wreaths are laid in honour of all the heroes."

Utkal Divas holds deep emotional significance for every Odia heart. It recalls the tireless efforts and sacrifices made by generations of Odia leaders and people to achieve a distinct state based on linguistic identity after years of struggle.

The formation of Odisha on this day fulfilled the aspirations of the Odia-speaking population, who sought administrative and cultural unity under one state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended greetings on the occasion, highlighting Odisha as the "timeless symbol of cultural as well as spiritual greatness" and the contribution of its people in propelling several fields.

"Odia music, art and literature have enriched India in countless ways. The people of Odisha, known for their determination, simplicity and warmth, have made remarkable contributions across fields. May Odisha keep scaling new heights of progress in the times to come," the PM wrote on X.

State-wide celebrations, cultural programs, and tributes to freedom fighters and Odia icons are being organised to mark the occasion, reinforcing the rich heritage and vibrant identity of Odisha.

From today, Odisha will also observe Odia Pakhya, a fortnight-long celebration of Odia language, culture and heritage, which will continue till April 14.

Earlier, Odisha Minister Suryabanshi Suraj highlighted that each day till April 14 would be focused on the culture of the state, stating that such efforts would promote the Odia culture to the new generation.

"Each day is dedicated to one subject regarding the Odia culture, literature and language to promote our historical significance and traditions... The main aim is to promote the Odia culture, restore our significance, and induce Odia thoughts among Gen Z," he said.

Good to see greetings from both LoP and PM. But sometimes these feel like routine political messages. I wish there was more substantive discussion on supporting Odisha's craftspeople and tackling issues like migration from the state. The sentiment is nice, but action is better.

The Odia Pakhya initiative is brilliant! Dedicating each day to a different aspect of culture is a wonderful way to connect Gen Z with their heritage. We need more such programs in every state to preserve our linguistic diversity.

The mention of Odisha's unique crafts is key. We must actively buy handloom sarees like Sambalpuri and support the artisans. Our culture lives through these crafts. Happy Utkala Dibasa!
