Holistic development not limited to economic growth: Delhi L-G

Delhi L-G T.S. Sandhu says holistic development includes moral, social, environmental, and cultural progress, not just economic growth for Viksit Bharat 2047.

"India's journey towards Viksit Bharat by 2047 is not merely about economic growth, but holistic development rooted in ethics, social harmony, and collective responsibility. - T.S. Sandhu"

New Delhi, May 15

Quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu said on Friday that, in Indian culture, holistic development is not limited to economic growth, as it includes moral progress, social harmony, environmental balance and cultural strength.

Delivering the Mahatma Hansraj Memorial Lecture at Hansraj College of Delhi University, the L-G said, "India's journey towards Viksit Bharat by 2047 is not merely about economic growth, but holistic development rooted in ethics, social harmony, and collective responsibility."

"This vision, articulated by PM Modi, draws its greatest strength from the character, commitment and aspirations of our youth," he said.

Sandhu said PM Modi's words remind us that the values of service and responsibility must be carried forward by the younger generation, who hold the key to India's future.

"Across the globe, societies that place their youth at the heart of development have consistently shown, innovation and long-term strength," said Sandhu, paying rich tribute to Mahatma Hansraj Ji - an educationist, philanthropist, and an unsung hero of India's cultural renaissance.

Congratulating students being felicitated for qualifying the UPSC and State Civil Services examinations, Sandhu said, "Public service is not a privilege, but a responsibility. Civil servants occupy positions where decisions directly influence the lives of citizens."

"The quality of governance, in any nation, ultimately depends upon the integrity, competence, empathy, and commitment of those who enter public institutions," he said.

Motivating students, Sadhu said, "For students who are present here today, you are moving into an increasingly competitive and uncertain world, one important lesson is that success should never be viewed only in personal terms."

"Every profession, whether in government, academia, business, technology, law, media, or the arts, ultimately contributes to shaping society. The question is, not only what career one chooses, but also what values one brings into that profession," he said.

Later, in a message on X, the L-G said, "A pleasure to have addressed the Mahatma Hansraj Memorial Lecture at Hansraj College today. Honoured the legacy of Mahatma Hansraj Ji - an educationist, philanthropist, and an unsung hero of India's cultural renaissance. Engaged with the students on India's deep-rooted civilizational ethos, where progress is inseparable from the spirit of Seva."

Very well said! Viksit Bharat 2047 is not just about building roads and towers, but also about building character. I wish more politicians would talk about moral progress and environmental balance instead of just vote bank politics. 👏

Nice words from the L-G, but let's be real - our education system still focuses on rote learning and marks. We need to actually teach ethics, empathy, and social harmony in classrooms, not just mention them in memorial lectures. Talk is cheap, action matters.

As a Delhi University student, I really appreciate this message. Our generation is so stressed about competitive exams and jobs that we forget about values. The L-G is right - success shouldn't be just personal. We need to think about how we can serve society. 🙏

Holistic development sounds great in theory, but in practice, we still see corruption in civil services, pollution in our cities, and social divisions everywhere. The L-G should focus on cleaning up Delhi's air and water first before giving philosophy lectures. Just saying.

Beautifully put! Mahatma Hansraj Ji was indeed an unsung hero. We need more leaders who remind us that public service is about responsibility, not power. The youth need this vision - let's hope the bureaucrats actually live up to these ideals. 🇮🇳
