Eight dead, eight missing in Keralam rain-related incidents; 5,792 shifted to relief camps

Eight people have died, eight others remain missing and thirteen people have sustained injuries in rain-related incidents in Keralam, while 5,792 people have been shifted to 209 relief camps across the state.
An official release said that Chief Minister VD Satheesan continues to remain in touch with the ministers in charge of various districts and district administrations regarding the rain-related situation in the state.
Rainfall has reduced compared to the previous day, bringing some relief. Cleaning and sanitation operations have begun in flood-affected areas, and political workers and voluntary organisations have been urged to participate in the cleaning drives. The government said it would extend all necessary support.
According to the latest figures, eight deaths have been confirmed, while eight people remain missing. Thirteen people have sustained injuries. A total of 5,792 people have been shifted to 209 relief camps across the state.
Twenty-seven houses have been completely destroyed while 196 houses have suffered partial damage. The government said assistance would be provided to the families of those who lost their lives as well as to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
People living in hilly areas are to remain vigilant. The release said that although rainfall has reduced, all necessary preparations have been made to deal with any eventuality.
The update added that public representatives and volunteers are actively engaged in relief operations, and people can approach the government machinery for any assistance they require.
The state government has said it is fully prepared to deal with any emergency situation and urged people to strictly follow the instructions issued by the government and district administrations.
The government also assured that adequate financial assistance will be provided to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to people who have lost their homes, crops and livelihoods. Those injured in rain-related incidents will be provided with the best possible medical treatment. The government said it would stand by the affected people and extend all necessary support during this difficult period.
The Travancore Devaswom Board has advised devotees planning to visit Sabarimala on August 2 and 3 for Niraputhari to reconsider their pilgrimage in view of heavy rain, flooding in Pampa, and the possibility of landslides. A security alert has been issued for the area.

This is heartbreaking. 27 houses completely destroyed and people losing their livelihoods. The government should ensure that compensation reaches the affected families quickly without bureaucratic delays. Also appreciate the advice to devotees about Sabarimala - safety should always come first.

First Mumbai floods, now this. We need to seriously talk about climate change and how our infrastructure is not coping. 5,792 people in relief camps is a huge number. I hope the government gives proper financial assistance for rebuilding homes and not just token amounts. These are our citizens, not statistics.
Praying for the missing people and their families 🙏 It's good that rainfall has reduced a bit, but the danger isn't over. People in hilly areas should definitely follow safety instructions. Also, the cleaning campaigns are a great initiative - I hope many people volunteer. In times like this, we must stand united.
The government should be more proactive during monsoon season. Every year we see similar tragedies in Kerala and other states. Why haven't we learned from 2018 floods? Yes, relief is important, but prevention and early warning systems need to be strengthened. Also, illegal constructions in eco-sensitive zones should be strictly dealt with.
