New Delhi, April 17

In an initiative towards building a clean, green and pollution-free Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 200 new electric buses from the Delhi Transport Corporation depot at East Vinod Nagar.

With the addition of 200 new buses, the total bus fleet in the capital has exceeded 6,300, including 4,500-plus electric buses, making Delhi the city with the largest electric bus fleet in the country, said an official statement.

She said the government aims to increase this number to approximately 14,000 buses by the year 2028-29. These buses are equipped with CCTV cameras, panic buttons, real-time tracking, and features friendly to persons with disabilities.

On this occasion, the Delhi-Rohtak interstate e-bus service was also launched, the Madanpur Khadar bus terminal was dedicated to the public and the newly constructed administrative building of the depot was also inaugurated, said the statement.

The Chief Minister stated that electric mobility is being rapidly promoted by our government to make the capital pollution-free.

She remarked that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country and Delhi are continuously moving towards new heights of development.

The event was attended by Delhi government's Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, senior officials of the concerned department, and other dignitaries.

The Chief Minister said that the objective of every initiative of the Delhi Government is to provide better connectivity, a clean environment, and modern transport facilities to the citizens.

She noted that Friday is a special day as four major projects were inaugurated simultaneously.

She informed that a large number of the new buses are 'Devi' buses, which will provide better transport facilities to common citizens by reaching remote and narrow lanes.

Additionally, the launch of the Delhi-Rohtak interstate bus service will strengthen regional connectivity. The Chief Minister termed the inauguration of the Madanpur Khadar bus terminal as a crucial facility for passengers, making transport services more organised.

She also mentioned the inauguration of the newly constructed administrative building at the East Vinod Nagar depot, stating that better facilities enhance the efficiency of employees.

This building is equipped with a biometric system and health check-up facilities to ensure that drivers operate buses in a safe and healthy condition, thereby reducing the possibility of accidents.

CCTV and panic buttons are very welcome features, especially for women passengers. Safety should always be the top priority. Hope these buses are well-maintained and the schedules are reliable.

Good initiative, but the real test is on the ground. We've seen new buses before, but then they break down or there aren't enough drivers. The focus should be on sustainable operation, not just photo-ops.

As someone who lives in Delhi, I'm cautiously optimistic. The 'Devi' buses for narrow lanes sound promising if they actually reach interior colonies. The interstate service to Rohtak is a great idea for regional connectivity.

Health check-ups for drivers is a smart and humane move. A healthy driver means safer roads for everyone. Kudos for thinking about the staff's well-being too. More governments should adopt this.

Delhi leading in electric buses is a proud moment for the country! This is the way forward for all metro cities. Clean air and modern transport - what's not to like? Hope the 14,000 target is met on time. 🇮🇳
