Bhopal, Dec 2 : Again, Bhopal is readying to observe the anniversary of the world's worst industrial disaster to pay respects to those who died and maimed following leakage of toxic methyl isocyanate from the now closed pesticide plant of Union Carbide this day 24 years ago.
Various non-government organisations claiming to further the cause of gas victims have become active again to observe the annual ritual of taking out rallies to decry Union Carbide now acquired by Dow Chemicals and torch light processions to mourn the dead.
At the government level, an all faith prayer will be held at the Barkatullah Bhavan here tomorrow to pay tributes to the victims.
Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice D M Dharmadhikari will lead the prayers, official sources said.
A torchlight procession will be taken out from Bharat Talkies to Union Carbide plant tonight. Several rallies opposite the carbide plant were planned for tomorrow.
NGO, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan Convenor Abdul Jabbar castigated the successive governments for ignoring the cause of gas victims. He said at least 30,000 people were killed while another one lakh people were permanently disabled due to exposure to toxic MIC.
