Guwahati, Dec 2 : At least three people were killed and 30 others injured when Karbi militants triggered a bomb explosion inside a passenger train at Diphu station of central Assam this morning.
NE railway officials and sources at Diphu police station said the passenger train, travelling from Guwahati to Tinsukia, was stationed at Diphu station when the blast occurred in coach no 8209 of the train at 0810 hrs.
The deceased were identified as Kamal Singh Teron, Rajesh Debnath and Ratul Dhar - a minor.
Police confirmed that Karbi militants were behind the incident as they had been observing a week-long road blockade.
The coach was packed with passengers and as a result three died on the spot while the injured were shifted to two Diphu civil hospitals and Lumding railway hospital, the sources said.
The new Assam DGP G M Srivastava, who was appointed only last night, had said his first priority was to restore confidence amongst the people.
