Agartala, Dec 2 : In a bid to improve self-employment opportunities and upgrade the skills of poor sections of the society, the Tripura government has announced to launch an ambitious project worth Rs five crore to be implemented through Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Official sources here today said Tripura was the first state in the Northeast to coin the idea under state-supported project to develop small scale industries as well as to eradicate poverty.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar would launch the project on December 4 and all Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in rural areas and low-income groups among the urban poor would be brought under the project.
''Initially, SHGs will be formed with all the targetted people and skill development training will be imparted while Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 one-time grant would be given to BPL and urban poor SHGs as operational fund,'' state Rural Development Minister Jitendra Choudhury said, adding subsequently they would be provided soft loans at two per cent interest rate.
The main objective of the project is to ensure income generation activity and eradicate poverty in the state and at the same time, human resources would be mobilised for developing small scale industries, Mr Choudhury underlined, adding about 25,000 SHGs had been operating in Tripura.
