India overall PC sales grows 24 pc QoQ

Kolkata, Nov 26 : The overall India PC market sales (shipments) touched 21.9 lakh units during the July-September 2009 quarter, recording a 24 pc quarter on quarter growth pointing to a strengthening recovery. Desktop PC sales accounted for nearly two-thirds of total PC sales at 14.58 lakh units, representing a 15.2 pc increase quarter-on-quarter (3Q CY09 over 2Q CY09).

The sales of Notebook PCs grew at 46.4% quarter-on-quarter (3Q CY09 over 2Q CY09) crossing the 7 lakh mark in a single quarter, for the first time, said an

Personal computer shipments have grown for the last three consecutive quarters after dropping sharply from a peak of 22.59 lakh units in July-September 2008 to 15.60 lakh units in October-December 2008.

In the overall PC (Notebooks and Desktops combined) market, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 17.1%, while Dell (11.3%) and Acer (11.1%) took the second and third spots, respectively.

In terms of desktop PC shipments HP retained its top position with a market share of 12.2%, followed by HCL and Acer in second and third spots, respectively during 3Q CY09. In terms of notebook PC shipments, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 27.0% in 3Q CY09; Dell retained the second spot, while Acer came third.

According to Kapil Dev Singh, Country Manager, IDC India, “The July-September 2009 quarter experienced a strong boost from new found consumer confidence that reflected in increased demand during the festive season. Overall Consumer PC sales recorded a 28% growth quarter-on-quarter (3Q CY09 over 2Q CY09). This performance underlines the recovery in the India PC market.”

The 21% quarter-on-quarter growth in the commercial PC shipments was a result of improved shipments across all sectors. While shipments to the public sector (Government) topped the growth charts during the quarter, the news of growth of shipments to large and very large enterprises will be welcomed by the industry.

“Commercial PC sales can be expected to steadily improve as the economy recovers. Even though the consumer PC segment recorded a faster 28% QoQ growth, industry will need to watch how the recovery in consumer PC shipments unfolds in the quarters ahead,” said Sumanta Mukherjee, Lead PC Analyst, IDC India.

“The emerging mini notebook PC category needs to evolve in terms of processing power and graphics capabilities to compete with the mainstream notebook PC form factor. In the quarters ahead, the segment will desperately seek technology innovations to propel it to the next level of functionality and user adoption,” Sumanta added.

The India PC market size, growth rates and vendor shares reported here are in terms of “unit shipments”, interchangeably referred to as ‘sales’ in the press release. As per IDC taxonomy, unit shipments constitute a measure of the number of PCs shipped by a vendor to all distribution channels or directly to end users.

Units are counted as they leave the vendor and are not double counted in the case of OEM relationships in which systems are shipped twice.
