India can exchage info on misuse of aid : European Union

New Delhi, Nov 4 : The European Union (EU) today said it is 'extremely vigilant' about how the aid it gives to various countries, including Pakistan, is used and has several monitoring mechanisms in place.

Ms Danièle Smadja, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission, said at a press conference here ''We have a number of mechanisms in place not only at the EU level, but also in the donor community..." ''The EU gives substantial aid for humanitarian purposes to Pakistan. We are extremely vigilant about how the aid is used,'' she said.

Asked whether the EU was contemplating any measures against Pakistan in the wake of reports that Islamabad had diverted part of the assistance for funding anti- India terrorism, Ms Smadja said the EU listened very carefully to what India was saying.

"whenever we have discussions with India, we listen very carefully to what India is saying...India is very well placed to exchange information with us whenever necessary,'' Ms Smadja said.
