10268 definite, 1757 likely hotel rooms for CWG: Tourism Ministry
New Delhi, Oct 21: There are 10,268 'definite' rooms available for the requirement of the 2010 Commonwealth Games with an additional 1,757 rooms under the 'likely' category, the Tourism Ministry was informed here today.
A total of 5,645 rooms were completed and work for rest was in progress. Union Tourism and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Kumari Selja was told in a meeting to review the progress of creation of additional accommodation for the Commonwealth Games.
She was informed that around 55 per cent of the requirement of hotel rooms for the 12-day sports event was complete.
''There is a requirement of additional 30,000 hotel rooms in Delhi NCR for the CWG 2010 and all hotel projects coming up for the Games should be ready and completed by June 30, 2010, to make the Games a grand success,'' Ms Selja said.
It was also decided that 5,500 DDA residential flats located at Vasant Kunj and Jasola for the international event which would be furnished and operated by ITDC, should be ready and handed over to ITDC in phases between January to May, next year to enable timely furnishing of these flats.
The Delhi Government was advised to do aggressive marketing for Bed and Breakfast scheme to meet the targets for the CWG.
Presently, there were 1,534 ''Bed and Breakfast' units available in the Delhi and the NCR areas.
It was decided to use around 11,000 rooms of guest houses in the city and their infrastructure beautification of the surrounding areas was being undertaken.
Ms Selja was also informed that the Haryana Government identified vacant sites at Surajkund and hotel for setting up tented accommodation, while the Defence Ministry identified a Nodal Officer for matters related to identification of defence land for setting up of tented accommodation.
''Once the projects are complete by adhering to all rules and by laws, Government agencies should ensure that they get all facilities and completion certificates speedily,'' she added.
However, she asked the agencies to prepare a checklist to monitor violations, if any, by the builders so that they could be cautioned well in time to rectify the violations.
The meeting also decided that completed hotel projects should obtain completion certificate and necessary clearances and become operational early and requested state governments to process the applications and issue and necessary completion certificates to the hotels.
The hotels too were advised to apply for classification under appropriate star category, Ms Selja added.
The Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry indicated availability of 3,250 beds of hostels of educational institutions in the Capital and proposed them to be upgraded and used as additional accommodation during the Games.
In the last review meeting, held in the first of week of September, only 4,238 rooms were complete and now 1,407 additional hotel rooms were ready.
