Tributes paid to legendary filmmaker Bimal Roy at DIAF

New Delhi, Oct 10: He was one of the first Indian filmmakers to have a strong social connect in his films like 'Do Bigha Zameen', Bandini' and 'Sujata'.

It was only fitting then that the ongoing Delhi International Art Festival (DIAF) pay its tribute to Bimal Roy though a festival of his films that kickstarted today with the screening of Dharmendra, Nutan-starrer 'Bandini'.

Inaugurating the festival, being held at the Siri Fort Auditorium in the capital on the occasion of the birth centenary year of the legendary filmmaker, his son Joy Bimal Roy said,''Cinema is an important social representation of the society we live in. This is something that is reflected through my father's films.'' Speaking on the occasion, Mr Roy, accompanied by his sister and Bimal Roy's daughter Aparajita Sinha, said,'' I think my father's films speak for themselves. He lived for his cinema.'' Actions spoke louder than words in my father's films, which had fewer dialogues, he added.

''I am really delighted that my father is being paid tribute through his films at the Delhi International Arts Festival. I am happy cinema is also a part of this Arts Festival,''he further said.

On the occasion, Ms Sinha informed that they were planning to have another Centenary Film Festival of their father's films either in November or January next year.

Apart from 'Bandini', other films to be screened at the festival, which will be on till October 14, are 'Parakh', 'Sujata', 'Do Bigha Zameen' and 'Madhumati'.

The festival is being held in collaboration with the Directorate of Film Festivals and the National Film Archives of India.
