Vedanta assures rehab package for Chattisgarh coal mine project

Raipur, Feb 2 : Vedanta-controlled Bharat Aluminum Company Limited (BALCO) management has promised a comprehensive rehabilitation package for the families to be displaced by its proposed 1,070-hectare coal mine project at Taraimar under Dharamjaygarh block in Chhattisgarh's coal-rich Raigarh district

Expressing satisfaction over the recent public hearing organised by the local administration at Taraimar for environmental clearance to the project, a BALCO spokesman today rejected all apprehensions of villagers about pollution, payment of compensation and rehabilitation of the project-affected families.

Company Vice-President Sanjay Jain, who attended the public hearing amidst angry protest by a group of villagers opposed to the coal mine project, said the land would be acquired from the farmers as per the compensation policy set by the government, and affected families would be properly resettled at a residential colony with all basic amenities.

Besides, Mr Jain said, one member from each displaced family would be provided job and Rs 20 crore earmarked for community development and creation of a green belt around the mine area. (UNI)
