A severe depression formed over southwest Bay of Bengal on Friday has intensified into cyclonic storm 'Madi', the India Meterological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.


The storm will bring rainfall at few places , including coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, during next 48 hours.

"A depression formed over southwest Bay of Bengal in the morning of 6th December, 2013. Moving northwards it intensified into cyclonic storm 'MADI' in the early morning of
today, the 7th December, 2013. The cyclonic storm, MADI over southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary and lay centered at 1130 hours IST of 7 th December 2013 over southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 10.5 0 N and longitude 84.0 0 E, about 500 km southeast of Chennai and 370 km northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka)," the IMD said in a statement on Saturday.

"It would intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours. It would move nearly northwards very slowly during next 48 hrs and then recurve north-northeastwards," it said.

The government has advised fishermen along and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts to be cautious while venturing into sea and should not venture into deep sea
