Cabinet to discuss Telangana draft today

New Delhi, Dec 5 : The Union Cabinet will take up the final draft report of Telangana on Thursday, said reports.

While the Group of Ministers (GoM) took up on Tuesday the draft bill for bifurcating Andhra Pradesh and forming Telangana, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said his government is fully committed to the formation of the new state.

"Our government is committed to the formation of Telangana and it will be our effort to make full use of the due process of law to ensure that Telangana just come about," he said.

The Telangana bill will be tabled in winter session of Parliament and there is almost a consensus on its passage now.

Earlier reports said the proposed state of Telangana could include two more districts of Anantapur and Kurnool in Rayalaseema region.

According to media reports, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi have approved the decision to include them by redrawing the boundaries of proposed Telangana state.

This new region would be known as 'Rayala-Telangana', said an NDTV report.

The Union Cabinet would approve of the same and send it for the nod of the President, said reports.

The new state was expected to have 10 districts, a population of 35.38 million and an area of 1.14 lakh square km and including Andhra Pradesh capital Hyderabad, which will serve as a common capital for 10 years.

The GoM earlier had submitted its draft on bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and creation of Telangana as the 29th state of India.

India's ruling Congress party in July this year approved a move to carve out the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh as the 29th state of the country, giving in to a five-decade-long demand from supporters in a major decision ahead of 2014 elections.

Officially urging the government to take constitutional steps that will see the state's formation, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution following a meeting of the constituents of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

The Telangana region, which merged with Andhra Pradesh in 1956 against the wishes of many local residents, comprises 10 districts - Adilabad, Hyderabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rangareddy, and Warangal.
