A very severe cyclone named 'Lehar' is all set to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast soon.

According to weather bureau reports, it is now a 'very severe cyclonic storm' over southeast Bay of Bengal, and is moving westwards.

The cyclone is reportedly centred at around 1,100 km east-southeast of Machilipatnam, which would intensify while moving west-northwestwards.

Moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to commence from Wednesday afternoon over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The intensity of rainfall is likely to increase at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy falls over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh from Thursday.

The Andhra Pradesh government has issued alerts in all nine coastal districts and directed district officials to take precautionary measures. The government has also ordered evacuation of people from low-lying areas.

In an attempt to up the precautionary measures, the state government has sought four helicopters and 15 additional NDRF teams from the central government, said media reports.
