Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M] general secretary Prakash Karat and Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] president Sharad Yadav were also seen on the stage.
Speaking at the event, Kumar said: "We have gathered to prevent communalism in the country. The nation has to stand united."
"Today all the parties here must take oath that we are going to sacrifice our lives but not let communal harmony be disturbed in the country," he said.
CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury told media that the objective behind the convention was to 'save the country from communalism'.
Speculations over the formation of a non-Bharatiya Janata Party and non-Congress front is buzzing for quite some time now.
