"He has extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and has wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the accident," said the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement.
At least 44 people on board a Hyderabad-bound Volvo bus were charred to death as the vehicle caught fire at Mahabubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, the police said.
The mishap reportedly occurred when the bus driver attempted to overtake a car and hit its fuel tank on a culvert. The tank exploded and the bus caught fire.
Few people, including the driver and a cleaner of the bus, escaped from the vehicle before it was fully gutted.
They were admitted to a hospital.
The bus was reportedly carrying 49 passengers.
According to reports, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.Kiran Kumar Reddy has ordered a probe into the matter.
The bus, which belonged to Jabbar Travels, was travelling from Bangalore city in Karnataka to Hyderabad city when the mishap occurred.
