Bangladesh: Tornado death toll touches 20
The death toll from a tornado that swept though 15 villages in Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh touched 20 on Saturday, officials said
More than 200 people were injured and above 300 houses were damaged as the tornado, which lasted for several minutes as it ripped through the district on Friday.
Thousands of trees were uprooted by the tornado.
"Railway communications on the Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chittagong were snapped as the Bhatshal railway station was damaged. Bus service halted on Dhaka-Agartala Highway as the tornado blew over trees on the road stretch from Ramrail to Chinar," New Age reported.
The Border Guard Bangladesh personnel conducted rescue operations in the district, reports said.
The injured people were admitted to Brahmanbaria General Hospital and the upazila health complex at Akhaura, an official said.
"We felt a wave of heat sweeping over. I cannot explain what happened," Abdur Rashid, who survived the tornado at Akhaura, told New Age.
