Endolite India launches artificial foot and ankle

By Debdatta Sengupta, Kolkata Sept 30 : The Kolkata Press Club on Friday housed the launch of the 'Elan Foot' - a hi-tech microprocessor controlled artificial foot and ankle system, by Endolite India.

The launch was announced by the UK-based Senior Consultant Prosthetist John Ross at the press conference held here.

Ross enlisted some of the prime features of 'Elan' (or the electronic ankle) like a microprocessor controlled hydraulic ankle, a motor-driven ankle function, an inbuilt bluetooth PC interface etc.

Apart from the comfort variables, patients will also be benefited with fast walking, assistance while slope assent, braking while slope descent among other features.

Coming to the rescue of thousands of upper and lower limb amputees as well as the patients requiring orthotic (support for weak limbs) services like those suffering from paraplegia, cerebral palsy etc., these products start from a range of Rs 20,000.

The launch was a part of Endolite's CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiative to think differently for the financially constrained section of the society, officials noted.

"Such attempt started with the Bhuj Camp," said Rahul Dolkania, Regional Head (East) Endolite India Ltd.

However, he added that approaches to the government concerning price subsidies or service expansion within the state has not yet materialized.

Presently its only center, Endolite Prosthetic and Orthotic services, is located at Taratala.

Present at the session was Suvro Joardar, the former Ranji player to share his knowledge about the company's prosthetic services.

Joardar had met with an accident 6 years ago having to undergo a right-leg amputation.

Six to seven months post this mishap, he was able to come back to normal life.

Presently he is a member of the Bengal's Physically Challenged Cricket team and the proprietor of Joardar Enterprise, a corporate cricket institution.

"Will power is also necessary," said Joardar.
