"The nation needs a special change. It is clear who they want as their next Prime Minister," RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav told reporters.
Asked if he is referring to Modi, Madhav said: "The whole world knows who we are referring to, who has got the people's approval."
However, he said it is up to the BJP to take a final decision on the issue and make an official announcement.
"RSS is not shouldered with the responsibility to convince the BJP on a particular issue, but to convey the nation's mood to the party," said Madhav.
Despite remaining a polarising force even within his party, the BJP could officially name Modi, who has already been appointed as the campaign head of the party for the 2014 general elections, as its Prime Ministerial candidate before Sept 19, media reports said.
