Tunda sent to police custody

New Delhi, Aug 17 : A Delhi court sent top bomber of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Syed Abdul Karim alias Tunda, who was arrested on Friday, to three-day police custody on Saturday.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Saturday said they have arrested Tunda from the Indo-Nepal border.

"Abdul Karim Tunda, an important operative of the LeT and one of India's most wanted, has been arrested," Delhi Police Special Cell commissioner SN Srivastava said at a press conference on Saturday.

"Tunda was arrested yesterday and he has been produced in the court," he said.

"Tunda was working with the Lashkar-e-Taiba from Pakistan, he was arrested from the Indo-Nepal border," said Srivastava. "We have confiscated a Pakistani passport from him."

Srivastava said Tunda trains Muslim youth to make improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

"He trains young Muslims and teaches them how to make IEDs," said the commissioner.

The 70-year-old is wanted in India for 40 terror and 33 criminal cases.

Tunda, who masterminded 40 blasts in New Delhi, Panipat, Sonepat, Ludhiana, Kanpur and Varanasi between December 1996 and January 1998, killing 21 people and injuring over 400 others.

"He also played a role in blasts in Mumbai and Hyderabad in 1993," said Srivastava. "In 1996, he came back to India via the Dhaka youth."

"There were serial blasts in Delhi just after that and he was responsible for it. He was associated with Hafiz Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi," said the cop.

Tunda was a resident of Pilkhuwa city of Uttar Pradesh.
