Samajwadi Party activists demand Beni Prasad Verma's resignation

Kanpur, Mar. 21 : Samajwadi Party (SP) activists and supporters on Thursday protested in Kanpur and demanded the resignation and imprisonment of Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma over his remarks against their party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Recently, while addressing a rally in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, Verma made few adverse remarks against Yadav.

He had accused Yadav of having links with the militants and of taking "commission" for supporting the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

However, on Wednesday, Verma expressed regret over the remark.

Expressing their ire, the irate protesters stopped a train in Kanpur, shouted slogans and also burnt Verma's effigy.

Mukesh Singh, a Samajwadi Party activist, demanded Verma's resignation and called for imprisoning him.

"Beni Prasad Verma has spoken against our minister, that is why we burnt his effigy and we stopped the train. We demand his resignation and he should be put behind the bars," said Mukesh.

Samajwadi Party leader Gyanesh Mishra has strongly denounced Verma's remarks and said that the supporters of their party will not let Verma enter Uttar Pradesh.

"Beni Prasad Verma has used foul words against Mulayam Singh Yadav. He called him a ruffian and he also said that he had links with the militants. We strongly condemn this. Supporters of Samajwadi Party will not let Beni Prasad Verma enter in the state of Uttar Pradesh. We appeal to all the supporters of Samajwadi party to not let him enter in any city of Uttar Pradesh," said Mishra.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Verma said that he would abide by Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi's decision.
