India celebrates Choti Holi
People across India celebrated 'Choti Holi' or 'Holika Dahan' on Tuesday as a prelude to the festival of colours Holi on Wednesday.
Invoking the legend of Prahlad, bonfires are lit across the country on the occasion of 'Holika Dahan'.
According to Hindu mythology, Prahlad worshipped Hindu god Vishnu which angered his father- demon king Hiranyakashipu.
Bonfires are lit in memory of the miraculous escape that young Prahlad accomplished when demoness Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu, carried him into the fire.
Holika was burnt but Prahlad escaped without a injury.
'Holika Dahan' is referred to as 'Kama Dahanam' in South India.
Celebrating the occasion, netizens shared their thoughts on micro-blogging site Twitter.
One Arnojya tweeted: "Choti Holi and Holikadahan today! Let's see what my day will bring to me.. Hoping for a good time for myself and for everyone."
A netizen Jhanak Shukla posted on his Twitter homepage: "Happy Choti Holi Everyone."
Sharing her thoughts, another Mahima Kukreja said: "I used to celebrate Chot Holi as a kid. As an adult, I woke up and failed to realize that it was Choti Holi."
