Goa building: Toll rises to 27

Panaji, Jan 11 : The death toll in Canacona building collapse in Goa has gone up to 27 as the tragedy completes a week on Saturday.

The rescue operation is expected to conclude by evening, according to a senior official.

Last Saturday, the partly constructed five-storey building crashed on more than 50 daily wage labourers while they were on lunch break at about 2:35 pm. As of now, 16 people have been pulled out alive.

Around 100 fire fighters on emergency duty were assisted by the National Disaster Response Force from Pune.

The mechanical rescue operation was brought to a halt mid-this week and manual removal of the debris had begun.

The Goa Police have already arrested a senior government officer for corruption and registered culpable homicide against more than four persons including the builder, who is still on the run.

Police have sent team to neighbouring states to trace his whereabouts.
