Delhi Police to give Rs.38 lakh to killed constable's family

New Delhi, Jan 1 : After the Delhi government announced Rs.1 crore compensation to the family of a deceased excise department constable, the Delhi Police is set to give Rs.38 lakh.

"The constable's family will be given Rs.38 lakh from Delhi Police which is an entitled amount," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat told IANS.

The Delhi government Monday announced the compensation for Vinod Kumar, 48, who died Dec 28 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences after being beaten by a group of bootleggers in Ghitorni jungle near the Vasant Kunj area of south Delhi.

According to police, the attack on the constable took place around 1.45 a.m. Dec 27 when he along with constable Sokhinder and two civilians, Pawan and Mukesh, reached the area while chasing two bootleggers carrying liquor in their car.

A group of 10-12 men surrounded Vinod Kumar and his colleagues and hurled stones at them. Though others managed to flee, he was caught and beaten to death.

Three bootleggers have so far been arrested in the case, said a police officer.
