Jammu and Kashmir police rescues 3 from avalanche

By Saleem Iqbal Qadri, Srinagar, Jan 1 : Jammu & Kashmir police on Wednesday rescued three persons who were hit by an avalanche while they had gone in the forest area for collection of firewood.

The police identified the three persons as Riyaz Ahmad Bijad, Parvez Ahmad and Riyaz Ahmad of Sarfaraw, Gund of Ganderbal district in Jammu & Kashmir.

"With the help of locals we rescue two of them. However, the third youth Riyaz Ahmad Bijad son of Nisar Ahmad was completely buried under the snow," the police officials said.

"After three hours of grueling rescue operation he was also retrieved from the snow. Riyaz Ahmad Bijad was shifted to SKIMS Srinagar and his condition is reported to be critical," the police official said.

Authorities have issued advisories to the locals living in hilly areas in Kashmir valley to avoid venturing into the avalanche prone areas, the police informed.
