Indian sailor released from Togo jail: MEA

New Delhi, Dec 19 : The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Indian Merchant Navy Captain Sunil James, who was in jail in West Africa's Togo for the last five months, was released on Thursday.

"Sailors from #India Capt Sunil James & Vijayan released from detention in #Togo. Will leave for home later today," tweeted MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Thursday.

"After meet between #India's High Commissoner in Accra & Prez Gnassingbe of #Togo Capt Sunil James & Vijayan released. Now with HC Sagar," he posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Captain Sunil James' family met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Dec 10 to seek his help to bring back the jailed sailor to India.

According to reports, Singh assured all possible legal and diplomatic help from the government's side to enable the family in securing the release of James.

"He (Dr. Singh) was aware about all the details of our case. He made it clear that the Indian Government is putting its best efforts to solve the matter and bring Sunil back to India immediately," his brother Rakesh Madappa told The Hindu.

The Indian government said it was trying to bring back James in India so that he could perform the last rites of his son Vivaan who passed away this month.

It has appointed a special officer from the Prime Minister's Office to monitor the proceedings in Togo.

Eleven-month-old Vivaan, who was reportedly suffering from septicemia, died in a Mumbai hospital on Dec 2. His body is preserved at the hospital morgue.

James was arrested in Togo in July this year.
