Jessica: Convict Manu Sharma gets parole

New Delhi, Dec 18 : The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted nine days' parole to Jessica Lal murder convict Manu Sharma, who is serving life imprisonment for shooting the young model cum bartender, in order to let him sit for his post-graduation examinations in human rights.


Sharma has been granted parole from Dec 28 till Jan 5 next year after the police filed a status report informing about his examination, scheduled to commence from Dec 30.

The court has directed Sharma to appear for the exams from Delhi and not from Chandigarh.

Sharma's counsel told the court that jail authorities have given certificates to his client in an acknowledgement for his good conduct.

He has taken care of 470 children of convicts by financing for their studies and has not breached any condition laid down by the court earlier, his counsel said.

The counsel also asserted that this time also whatever condition the court will impose, Sharma will abide by it.

A politician's son, Manu Sharma is serving life imprisonment for the murder of Jessica at a socialite's party in 1999 when he shot the upcoming model for refusing him a drink after the bar was closed.

Jessica was a bartender in the party of Bina Ramani when the incident occurred, triggering a long legal crusade for the family of the victim who finally got justice after a media uproar and a civil society movement.

Sharma is the son of the Congress leader Venod Sharma.

The murder of Jessica inspired a Bollywood movie titled No One Killed Jessica, starring Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji.
